The transmission on your Porsche is of the utmost importance for its on road performance. The design of the Porsche transmission is one of the reasons for the company’s recognition of being a premium sports vehicle in all of its model classes.
When there is an issue with your Porsche’s transmission you will not have the same experience as with a sound one. Before this however, small problems, like strange noises may show themselves that can give you a warning before it becomes a disastrous issue for you as the owner. Let’s discuss what to do if your Porsche’s transmission is making strange noises and the possible causes.
Causes of Transmission Noise
Believe it or not there are several different noises and for just as many reasons that you can have strange noises coming from your transmission. While some of these noises could be caused by something different than your transmission, others are definitely a transmission issue. Here are a few sounds you may hear from your transmission if something is wrong.
- Whining: A whining noise is almost always coming from your Porsche’s transmission. If your Porsche is an automatic transmission you will count on the transmission fluid to make it change gears. When this fluid is low, your transmission will make a whining sound and continue until it will no longer shift. Another system on your car that can make a whining sound is normally your power steering, but this will only be when you are turning the steering wheel.
- Jerking Sound: When you put your Porsche into gear whether if it is an automatic or a standard transmission, if you have poor transmission mounts, a clunk or jerking sound will be made when the transmission body itself shifts. This can also be a bad U-joint in your driveshaft connection or something broken that is shifting inside the transmission.
- Grinding Metal Sound: Your Porsche’s transmission components are precisely made to size and fit inside the transmission like a glove. If there are any of the components damaged, you may hear a metal to metal grinding sound while the parts are rubbing one another and causing more damage.
- Other Sounds: Other sounds are harder to describe, but pay attention when your transmission shifts gears whether a manual or automatic. If the sounds are in synchronicity with the transmission attempting to shift, then it could very well be the issue.
Looking Beyond Sounds
While we are speaking about sounds you may hear, it is important that we realize other symptoms may show themselves while also hearing these sounds. If you think you are hearing sounds from your Porsche’s transmission here are some other experiences to look for to confirm.
- Transmission Will Not Shift: If your transmission will not shift into the next gear, and you hear grinding sounds, you definitely have a transmission issue.
- Overheating: Your transmission counts on your vehicle’s cooling system and transmission fluid to keep it in operating temperature range. If you are hearing whining, grinding, or any other sounds coming from the transmission area, pay close attention to any overheating of the transmission.
- Maintenance light: If you receive a warning from your Porsche’s onboard computer while hearing sounds from the transmission area, this could be another piece of evidence that your transmission needs service now.
Here’s What To Do
If your Porsche exhibits any of the sounds or other confirmation that you are having a transmission issue, find a safe place to park and contact an experienced Porsche technician to service your car immediately. While the sounds you are hearing may not have caused any damage yet, they will certainly lead to an expensive repair or transmission replacement later.
