The poor lubrication of the steering shaft causes it to stiffen and consequently fail.
Likewise, the steering wheel also requires a power steering pump to create the pressure needed to function effectively. If the fluid is thick or low or the pump seizes to work, it becomes difficult to create the pressure needed for effective functioning, causing the failure of the steering system.
Signs that Your Steering Shaft has Failed
- Difficulty making turns: A typical signal that your steering shaft might be damaged is when you experience difficulties making turns while driving.
- Strange noise: You may also start to hear strange or unusual noise coming from your shaft. However, you must be observant as not all noises translate to shaft failure.
- Difficulty steering: You should look out for situations when the wheel becomes more difficult to turn and the vehicle noise increases. This may also indicate an issue with the steering shaft.
- Steering wheel doesn’t return to the center: The steering wheel is meant to return to the center after making turns. If your steering wheel doesn’t return to its regular position while driving, it indicates a damaged steering shaft. If it fails to do so, you should probably see an expert.
