Mini Coopers are one of the most recognizable vehicles on the road today. They are fun to drive and turn heads. Their classic design is part of history. They are known for being reliable, yet they still experience component failures.
If you hear rattling noises coming from your Mini’s engine compartment, you may be suffering from timing chain failure. This failure needs to be rectified immediately.
Mini Coopers are Susceptible to Timing Chain Issues
Timing chain failure is one of the potential issues you may face when owning a Mini Cooper. Thankfully, you can help prevent the issue from occurring. Knowing which engine your car has will give you a heads up on your probability of having the issue.
If your Mini Cooper was manufactured between 2007 and 2010 and has a Prince engine, your car has a higher risk of failure. The rattling noise is often more noticeable when idling, moving slowly or in cold weather.
It is important if you hear the dreaded rattling noise you have the problem diagnosed immediately. Since the timing chain and tensioner are inside the engine, failure can cause permanent damage to the engine.
What is the timing chain?
The timing chain rotates the engine’s crankshaft and cam. It helps ensure all components of the engine work together. The chain is a vital part of your car that is needed for your Mini to operate. If the chain breaks, it can lead to complete engine failure.
What causes the rattling noise?
The rattling noise that is produced by your Mini Coopers is ominously referred to as the “death rattle noise.” It is often produced by the support rail. After time, the plastic rail can become weak and break. This causes the rail to lose the capability to generate enough tension for the timing chain, causing possible catastrophic engine damage; hence the slang term.
As soon as you notice the rattle, it is crucial that you have your Mini Cooper inspected by a Certified Mini technician. Failing to do so can lead to extensive damage and costly repair bills.
Helping to Prevent Timing Chain Failure
Timing chain failure is a known issue in Mini Coopers. However, there are some things you can do to help prevent or delay failure. In certain instances, the timing chain can fail due to the lack of proper lubrication.
A low oil level and dirty oil can damage the chain. Staying current on your regular maintenance and having your oil changed can possibly lengthen the life of your timing chain. It is often recommended that you change your Mini’s oil every 15,000 miles. However, if your vehicle has the Prince engine, we recommend that you have it changed every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
Even if you keep current on your oil changes, there is no guarantee you will not experience the “death rattle noise.” If you begin to hear any strange noises, bring your Mini Cooper into Motor Cars International to have it diagnosed and repaired.
