Your Mini makes use of important fluids to perform at its peak, and one of those is coolant.  Without coolant, your engine would become excessively hot and would be damaged as a result of overheating. When the coolant level in your MINI is topped up and circulating through the engine, your car will perform at its best, whereas overheating can cause the engine to break down.

Engine overheating as a result of low coolant level is caused by a lack of routine maintenance on your MINI. Apart from maintenance, some drivers may be ignorant of some of the warning indications that might lead to a more serious problem. Let’s look at some of the telltale signs that you are running low on coolant.

Warning Signs of Low Coolant

Different symptoms can show you that your cooling system is low on coolant. Here are some of the warning signs to look out for in your MINI:

  • When the Dashboard Temperature Gauge Turns Red: After driving your car for a while, you become accustomed to the level of your temperature gauge when everything is in order. If it increases into the red zone, it is a sign that something is wrong with the cooling system. Pull over safely as soon as you can and shut off the engine. Open the hood to allow the engine to cool off for at least 30 minutes before you begin to check for low coolant or a leak.
  • Bubbling from the Radiator: Your radiator can bubble if there is a low coolant level in your MINI. This results from the water in the coolant being boiled out of the liquid. What is left is a thick sludge that will also boil as it is forced through the system. Be careful when inspecting a hot radiator, as you should always let it cool down for at least 30 minutes before opening the radiator cap.
  • Inadequate Fuel Economy: When your engine is running at peak performance, gasoline burns more effectively, resulting in lower consumption. However, when the temperature rises as a result of low coolant, your fuel efficiency and emissions will suffer.
  • A Sweet Smell: Coolant has a purposely-unique sweet odor so you can quickly identify a leak. If you smell this in your cabin, it is one of the most obvious signs of a coolant leak. You may be able to diagnose a cooling system problem before it causes significant damage if you are aware of this odor.
  • Dashboard Warning Light: Illumination of the engine light on your dashboard can indicate that your Mini is low on coolant. Although this light might not always be indicative of a coolant leak, you should bring your car to our reliable mechanics for proper diagnosis of your engine’s problem.
  • Engine Seizure: When the coolant is low, your Mini’s engine can abruptly shut down. This is meant to prevent more harm if your engine overheats due to a shortage of coolant. You won’t be able to drive again until the engine is cool.
  • Other Symptoms of Coolant Depletion: Aside from engine problems, you may notice rising steam, an overheated hood, and a lack of control over your internal heating system. When you notice any of these symptoms, quickly call our mechanics to inspect and repair any issues in your Mini!
